Unresponsive Yeti 1000

Background and Symptoms

When I was little, my grandmother always used to bake such wonderful baked goods, using her Yeti 1000 to power her oven. I have such fond memories of the sweet aroma of half-baked chocolate chip cookies filling the room, the warm, green glow of the Yeti 1000's readout and yeah I'm fucking with you.
I rocked back to my van after a long day, ready to whip up a sandwich, watch a little thing on Netflix, then hit the sack. Well, my Goal Zero Yeti 1000 had other plans for me. When I tried to turn on my lights, nothing happaned. I peeked into my little compartment under the bed where I keep my Yeti, and the main readout was off. I tried to turn on the 12V and the inverter, and nothing happened. Similar things have happened before, and in those situations I unplugged everything, left it alone for a few minutes, then it kicked back on again. Not this time!
I did a bit of poking around, and found Todd Parker's YouTube video, showing how to do what is probably a software reset. No dice there either.
My Yeti 1000 was basically a massively heavy paperweight at this point. If this sounds like a problem you have, never fear, there is a way out!

How To Fix It In Words

The repair is fairly straight forward with only a phillips screwdriver, two hands, and half a brain!

  1. Flip it upside down, then take out all the screws from the base. Remove the baseplate to reveal the huge battery-pack.
  2. When I did the repair, I first disconnected the two huge connectors providing power to the inverter and 12V rail (presumably). Make sure you start with the positive side so nothing gets zapped!
  3. Disconnect the smaller wire on the side where the main readout is located on the front of the unit. I suspect that Step 2 is unnecessary, but I figured why not, I was already there anyway.
  4. Leave it alone for a few minutes to think about it's choices.
  5. Plug everything back in, and it should come right back to life!
  6. Put all the screws back in.

I suspect that something in the main controller got seriously wigged out, and by disconnecting all power from it, leaving it to settle for a second (aka all the power in the various capacitors to be spent), then restoring power allowed it to get a fresh start. Sadly, I still have no idea why this happens, but I'm glad I'm still keeping up with how to fix it when it does.

How To Fix It In Pictures

Coming soon! I have to take it apart again because I forgot to take pictures when I was actually doing it the first time.
